Why Majuli?
In the heart of the mighty and mystical Brahmaputra, lies the oldest and largest inhabited riverine island - Majuli.
Woven in a tapestry of spiritualism and subsistence living, Majuli offers visitors an experience of a lifetime.
Inhabited primarily by Mishing, Assamese, Deori, and Sonowal Kachri communities, Majuli came into prominence with the rise of neo-Vaishnavism in the 15th century. Since then, it has served as a hub and haven of socio-cultural heritage, while its landmass has continued to shrink, as the river around it grows.
We are inviting people from across the globe to participate in an immersive experience designed to showcase this enchanting piece of land and spread awareness about its survival challenges.
The Experience
Your journey begins with a sunset cruise over the Brahmaputra, as we acknowledge and embrace this mighty river, while the sky changes colours from blue to saffron, pink, and deeper blue.
We spend the next day at a farmhouse by a river beach. Local kids present us with a live exhibit of ‘Seven Sister Styles’ of the famous Bihu folk dance and join us for a picnic lunch at the river beach. As the sun sets, we immerse ourselves in spiritual awakening as we witness and absorb a Gayan Bayan performance at a nearby Satra.
On the third day, we invite artisans, handloom weavers, potters, sculptors, mask-makers, who conduct live demos of their artistic livelihoods. We visit a neighbouring tribal village and indulge in local music, theatre, and merry-making through the night.
After a brief meditative tryst with Palnam on the last day, we say our goodbyes.
